Q1 Season Splits the Market
Thursday's earnings parade showed a sharply bifurcated market: Solar Industries surged 8% to a lifetime high on 93% profit growth and a Rs 21,350 crore order book, while Lenskart hit a fresh 52-week high above Rs 600 after profit nearly quadrupled. In contrast, Tata Motors PV's consolidated profit collapsed over 80% YoY to Rs 775 crore as JLR's operating margin compressed to 2.8%, even as the same group's CV arm jumped 6% on strong numbers. ICRA's read that Q1 revenue growth accelerated to 22% despite margin headwinds suggests investors are rewarding execution and punishing weak spots within the same conglomerate.
Nifty Fights to Hold Ground
The Nifty 50 slipped 0.31% to 24,395.85 and the Sensex eased marginally to 78,079.96, with the index reportedly fighting a 100-point weekly deficit even as Bank Nifty bucked the trend, rising 0.33% to 57,635.25. IT stocks were the clear laggards, with Nifty IT down 1.16%, even as Wall Street's tech-led rally continued overnight. The divergence between domestic IT weakness and a firm banking complex points to sector-specific rather than broad-based selling pressure.
Rupee Pressure Persists
The rupee depreciated 12 paise to close at 95.45 against the US dollar on Thursday, weighed down by weak domestic markets and persistent foreign fund outflows amid geopolitical risk, according to CNBC-TV18. Adding to currency and external-account concerns, India's July trade deficit widened to $31.98 billion from $30.43 billion in June, exceeding economist estimates, as imports rose faster than exports. A widening deficit alongside sustained FII outflows is a combination worth monitoring for its cumulative effect on the currency.
Big-Ticket Financial Deals Land
Bank of America agreed to acquire up to 49.9% of Jio Financial's lending arm Jio Credit in an approximately Rs 18,268 crore ($1.9 billion) joint venture, initially taking a 26.5% stake with room to scale via warrants. Separately, Bank of Baroda raised $700 million in its first overseas bond issue since 2019, with strong investor demand tightening pricing on three- and five-year dollar notes. Both deals signal continued global capital appetite for India's financial sector even as broader FII flows into equities remain under pressure.
Capex and Order Wins Support Industrials
L&T secured a mega order worth up to Rs 15,000 crore to build what it calls India's largest NVIDIA B300 AI factory in Chennai, marking its formal entry into the AI infrastructure business. Hindustan Aeronautics also drew brokerage upgrades after Q1 profit rose 15% on improving Tejas Mk1A delivery visibility, with Nomura retaining it as a top defence pick. These wins, alongside Solar Industries' explosives and defence-led growth, underscore continued momentum in India's capex and defence manufacturing themes.
Regulatory Overhaul in Motion
SEBI unveiled a cluster of proposals Thursday: a colour-coded Credit Risk-o-Meter to simplify bond risk assessment, an easier SME IPO route for companies valued up to Rs 5,000 crore, and broadened accredited-investor criteria including a Rs 5 crore securities-asset threshold for individuals. Separately, the RBI proposed tighter loan pricing rules with external benchmark norms and APR caps on small-value loans. Collectively these signal a push toward more standardized, retail-friendly disclosure and lending frameworks.
Index Reshuffling Creates Flows
MSCI's rejig added Adani Energy Solutions and Lenskart Solutions to its India index while removing Astral, Balkrishna Industries and SBI Cards, with the latter two shifting to the Smallcap index. Astral separately rallied nearly 10% on strong Q1 results even as it faces MSCI exclusion, with Citi, Nuvama and Motilal Oswal all reiterating bullish coverage. Passive fund flows tied to such index changes can create short-term technical pressure independent of underlying fundamentals.
Global Backdrop Turns Supportive
Wall Street extended gains overnight, with the S&P 500 hitting an intraday record (closing near 7,798.99, +0.65%) and the Nasdaq up 0.81%, as softer-than-expected US wholesale inflation data eased rate concerns and falling oil prices lifted sentiment. The Nikkei added 0.98% to 68,977.6 in early Asian trade, though Hang Seng was flat at 25,396.51. A cooling US inflation trajectory and easing crude prices, with Brent near $87.23, offer a constructive global setup even as India's domestic indices lag.
