Nifty Tests Critical Support
The Nifty 50 slipped 0.12% to 24,366 and the Sensex eased 0.09% to 78,009.25, with Bank Nifty down 0.25% at 57,491.1, as technical analysts flag 24,000 as a decisive support level. Analyst Rupak De has warned that a break below this mark could trigger short-term bearishness, while pointing to auto and PSU banks as relatively resilient pockets. NIFTY IT underperformed further, down 0.31% to 31,357.75, reflecting continued caution on the export-facing technology pack.
IPO Calendar Stays Packed
Five companies are set to raise Rs 5,499.32 crore between August 17 and 21, led by Horizon Industrial Parks, even as Shiprocket and four other recently closed issues prepare to list. Lalithaa Jewellery Mart's IPO opens August 17 with a Rs 190-201 band, backed by a reported 177% profit jump to Rs 1,009.8 crore in FY26, while grey market premiums hint at an 11% listing pop. Fresh filings from Avtar Steel (Rs 585 crore) and Svatantra Microfin (Rs 3,000 crore) suggest the primary market pipeline remains deep despite choppy secondary market conditions.
Paytm's Sharp Weekly Rally
One97 Communications shares gained 11% this week, their biggest weekly move in four months, as Bernstein lifted its target to Rs 2,200 and JM Financial raised its target to Rs 1,950, both citing UPI monetisation potential. The rally stands out against a broader market that has delivered negative returns over the past year, per Livemint data showing the Nifty 50 down roughly 2%. Such a sharp, brokerage-driven repricing in a single stock is worth watching for how much of the good news is already reflected in price.
Forex Cushion Hits Record High
India's foreign exchange reserves rose $14.1 billion to a fresh high of $707 billion, aided by $9.9 billion in foreign currency assets and $3.9 billion in gold reserves, according to RBI data. The central bank is closing its FCNR(B) swap window a month early on August 31 given stronger-than-expected inflows, even as ICICI Bank separately seeks a $1.45 billion four-year loan from a BofA-led consortium to bolster foreign currency deposits. This buildup of external buffers comes even as India's balance of payments slipped into an $8.1 billion deficit in Q1FY27, driven by capital account outflows and a widening current account gap tied to fuel import costs.
Crude's Upward Pressure
Brent crude closed at $88.52 a barrel, up 1.67% and edging toward $90, as tanker attacks in the Strait of Hormuz and stalled Iran peace talks disrupted shipping, even as resilient storage levels offer some cushioning. Hindu BusinessLine's technical note flags Rs 7,400 and Rs 8,000 as key domestic levels to watch for consolidation. Higher crude directly feeds India's import bill and merchandise trade deficit, a dynamic already visible in the Q1FY27 current account widening to $3.1 billion.
Tata Sons Governance Question Mark
The Tata Sons AGM scheduled for August 18 may not proceed after Sir Ratan Tata Trust was unable to nominate a representative, reportedly due to a restriction imposed by Maharashtra's Charity Commissioner, PTI reported. As a key shareholder in the group's holding company, the Trust's absence introduces a governance uncertainty investors in Tata group listed entities will likely track closely. No financial impact has been disclosed yet, but the procedural snag is notable given the group's scale.
Domestic Flows Keep Building
Mutual fund AUM has surged Rs 9.5 lakh crore since last Independence Day to reach Rs 85.76 lakh crore by July 2026, with equity fund assets up 227% over five years as millennials shift from deposits to markets, per Livemint. Separately, mutual funds added meaningfully to holdings in Adani Enterprises, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, InterGlobe Aviation and Bajaj Finance during the June quarter. Axis Max Life CIO Sachin Bajaj noted equities are entering a favourable phase as earnings recover and valuations moderate, with financials, healthcare and capital goods among his preferred themes.
