Oil Shock Grips Markets: Nifty Slides to 23,259 as Crude Nears $109 and Yields Spike Globally

Freaky Friday for Dalal Street

The Sensex crashed over 700 points to close near 74,244.55 while the Nifty 50 shed 0.93% to settle at 23,258.9, marking a fifth straight weekly loss as escalating Middle East tensions kept crude oil above $108 a barrel. Bank Nifty underperformed with a 1.06% decline to 55,871.3, reflecting how rate-sensitive financials are bearing the brunt of the global bond selloff. Traders flagged Thursday's low of 23,380 and 56,231 on Bank Nifty as key levels that gave way, adding technical damage to the fundamental oil-yield squeeze.

Crude's Relentless Climb Rattles Everyone

Brent crude has surged roughly 13% this week, closing above $108 after tanker attacks and a reported Saudi output cut intensified fears of a prolonged US-Iran conflict disrupting Strait of Hormuz traffic. Analysts warn prices could spike toward $120 if hostilities escalate further, a scenario that directly threatens India's import bill given the country's heavy reliance on energy imports. This is the dominant thread running through nearly every market move today, from the rupee's slide to the bond yield surge to equity weakness.

Rupee Under Sustained Pressure

The rupee opened at 95.69 per dollar and has now weakened for three consecutive sessions, touching 95.72 as rising oil prices and foreign equity outflows compound pressure on the currency. The RBI has intervened through dollar-rupee sell-buy swaps and a 26-day VRRR auction to absorb Rs 5 lakh crore of surplus liquidity, signalling active management of both the currency and banking system liquidity. SBI Chairman C S Setty noted the $127 billion FCNR inflow will be absorbed gradually rather than triggering a lending surge.

Bond Yields Break Through Key Levels

India's 10-year G-sec yield surged past 7%, a three-month high, tracking the US 10-year yield which flirted with 5% amid rising Fed rate hike bets driven by oil-fuelled inflation worries. HSBC noted that rising global yields may now constrain India's own rate-cut cycle despite resilient domestic growth, a meaningful shift in the policy narrative. Japan's 10-year yield also jumped to 2.985%, underscoring this is a globally synchronized bond selloff rather than an India-specific event.

NSE IPO Trimmed Amid Valuation Caution

NSE has cut its Rs 22,561-crore IPO offer size by over 15%, reducing shares on offer to 12.64 crore from 14.89 crore, with eight selling shareholders including Morgan Stanley paring back stake sales. The price band has been set at Rs 1,700-1,785, with the issue opening September 17 and closing September 21, and this downsizing is being read by some commentators as a sign of mounting concern over investor appetite at the sought valuation. Retail investors get 35% allocation, with 50% reserved for institutional bidders.

Growth Story Intact, IMF Says

The IMF's Julie Kozack highlighted India's 7.8% growth as evidence of resilience despite the energy shock, with the institution describing India as a growth engine for the world driven by strong services and exports. However, the IMF is actively monitoring how sustained higher oil prices could affect India's fiscal and inflation trajectory, with an updated forecast expected next month. IDFC First Bank's Gaura Sen Gupta flagged separate upside risks to FY27 inflation from weak monsoon conditions affecting kharif and rabi crop prospects.

Wall Street and Asia Feel the Heat

The Dow Jones fell 0.60% to 52,064.1 and has lost over 1,600 points across four sessions, while the Nasdaq dropped 0.65% to 26,081.73 as Nvidia and Micron declined on rate-hike anxiety even as Apple gained post iPhone launch. Asian markets bore deeper scars, with the Nikkei tumbling 2.81% to 63,436.25 and the Hang Seng down 2.11% to 24,740.92, reflecting the region's acute sensitivity to both oil-import costs and rising Treasury yields.

Regulatory Signals Worth Noting

RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra told fintechs that user data must be treated as a fiduciary trust rather than a business asset, warning that data misuse causes irreversible damage to trust and stressing cybersecurity as firms scale. Separately, SEBI and RBI launched a Demat 2.0 pilot for tokenised corporate bonds without requiring new demat accounts or fresh KYC, while SEBI is also reworking the derivatives closing price mechanism after liquidity concerns surfaced. HDFC Bank also won all seven Bahrain court cases tied to Credit Suisse AT1 bond mis-selling allegations.
