NSE Makes Its D-Street Debut
The National Stock Exchange itself lists on the BSE today, becoming India's 11th largest company by market cap at ₹4.42 lakh crore, with grey market signals pointing to a modest 2-4.5% listing gain despite the Rs 22,562 crore offer being subscribed 5.71 times overall. Strong QIB demand of ₹4,498 crore contrasts with a cooling grey market premium, suggesting institutional conviction hasn't fully translated into retail enthusiasm. This is a landmark moment for market infrastructure ownership in India, but the muted GMP is a reminder that even marquee listings can face valuation scrutiny on debut day.
Nifty's Bullish Candle Faces a Test
The Nifty 50 closed at 23,446.8 (+0.14%) and Sensex at 74,828.25 (-0.04%) after Wednesday's 118-point rally, with technicians flagging resistance at 23,489-23,600 and support at 23,350 and 23,285. Bank Nifty added 0.14% to 56,548.9, extending Wednesday's 333-point surge, as crude, metals and financials drove the two-week high. Today's Sensex monthly expiry adds volatility risk on top of the NSE listing spectacle, a combination that could produce outsized intraday swings.
Global Growth Upgrades Pour In
India's FY27 growth outlook has been upgraded by the OECD (to 7.1%), ADB (to 7%), Fitch (to 6.9%) and S&P Global Ratings, all citing the June quarter's blockbuster 7.8% GDP print, strong investment and resilient services and exports. September's flash PMI data reinforces this, showing business activity at a three-month high on manufacturing and services demand. Yet Fitch has simultaneously flagged a possible 25 bps RBI rate hike in October, and export growth and services hiring both slowed, tempering the otherwise upbeat narrative.
Wall Street Stumbles, Fed Turns Hawkish
The Dow fell 0.68% to 51,511.59, the S&P 500 dropped 0.75% to 7,706.03 and the Nasdaq slid 1.13% to 26,936.04, as Fed Governor Michael Barr signalled more rate hikes may be needed with inflation still above target and the policy rate already at 3.75%-4.00%. This overnight weakness sits awkwardly against Nifty IT's sharp 1.72% fall to 28,334.05, suggesting India's technology exporters are absorbing both a softer US demand read-through and a stronger rupee-adjusted cost base. Asian markets diverged sharply, with the Nikkei surging 1.74% to 66,147.5 while the Hang Seng was flat at 24,834.12.
Defence and PSU Order Books in Focus
Bharat Dynamics signed an ₹810.79 crore Ministry of Defence contract for 160 indigenous Satellite Smart Anti-Airfield Weapons for the Indian Air Force, adding to the PSU's order pipeline as its financials improve. NTPC declared a final dividend of ₹3,393.83 crore, taking its FY26 total payout to ₹8,727 crore, its 33rd consecutive year of dividends, while targeting capacity expansion from 91 GW to 149 GW by 2032. Both stocks feature prominently on today's watch list alongside Canara Bank and Waaree Energies.
Brokerages Turn Bullish on NBFCs
Bajaj Finance shares jumped 3% after Jefferies reiterated Buy with a Rs 1,280 target and UBS upgraded the stock to Neutral with a Rs 1,100 target, part of a broader UBS call that NBFCs are better placed than banks given improving asset quality and a revival in unsecured lending. UBS also upgraded L&T Finance to Buy and separately added HDFC Bank to its APAC Key Call list with a ₹1,000 target ahead of Q2 results. The flurry of brokerage activity around financials aligns with Bank Nifty's outperformance and the sector's role in Wednesday's two-week-high close.
IPO Pipeline Keeps Building
Beyond NSE, WhiteOak Capital is preparing a ₹1,500 crore IPO that could value the asset manager at ₹9,000 crore, while Airtel Africa is exploring a London listing for Airtel Money that could raise up to $800 million, potentially the UK's largest listing since 2021. Separately, five more large issues including Jio Platforms and PhonePe are reportedly readying a combined ₹4.27 lakh crore in offerings. Ola Electric shares are also in focus after its board scheduled a September 28 meeting to weigh a rights issue, months after an ₹780 crore QIP.
Crude, Gold and Flows Cross-Currents
Crude oil eased 0.90% to $97.24, a relief for import-dependent India even as Fed hawkishness and firm bond yields temper the risk-on mood, while gold rose 0.39% to 4,335.1 in a classic haven bid. Foreign investors bought ₹1,617 crore of Indian shares on Wednesday after a heavy sell day, with domestic institutions adding another ₹2,341 crore, a signal of underlying support even as global rate uncertainty persists. Meanwhile bitcoin's surge near $86,000 highlights fresh risk appetite in alternative assets that could compete for investor attention.
