IT Stocks Ignite the Rally
The Nifty IT index rocketed 4.39% to 29,830.1, its sharpest single-day move since May 2025, as HCLTech surged over 7% on a strong Q2 beat—21% YoY profit growth to Rs 5,132 crore and $3.26 billion in new deal wins. The rally dragged TCS, Mphasis, Wipro, Tech Mahindra and LTM higher, adding a reported Rs 26,340 crore in market value within minutes, and lifted the Nifty 50 to 22,721.95 (+0.89%) and Sensex to 73,033.78 (+0.77%). Notably, this bounce came even as global AI-spending jitters pressured chip stocks in Korea and Japan, suggesting Indian IT's earnings-led rerating is, for now, decoupled from the broader AI trade unwind.
Rupee's Sharpest Comeback in Months
The rupee staged its biggest single-day gain in six months, strengthening 177 paise over two sessions to near 94-95 levels after RBI introduced a special dollar window for oil companies and tighter forex derivative rules. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman clarified the central bank's intent is to curb volatility rather than defend a fixed level, while signaling further measures may follow. INR/USD now sits at 95.28, essentially flat on the day, after the sharp prior move—a reminder that currency stabilisation efforts can be lumpy rather than linear.
Jio IPO Draws Record Global Demand
Reliance Jio Platforms has reportedly attracted over $20 billion in bids from global investors including Fidelity, Allianz and Capital Group, ahead of what could become India's largest-ever IPO at a valuation near Rs 10.3 lakh crore. Alongside this, analysts have flagged Reliance Industries' improving refining margins and retail growth as additional largecap considerations. The scale of anchor interest signals deep institutional appetite for India's digital and telecom growth story, even as broader FII flows stay choppy.
Hyundai's $15.5 Billion India Bet
Hyundai Motor Group has committed $15.5 billion to India through 2032, covering capacity expansion for Hyundai and Kia, a $700 million R&D boost, supplier network development and a dedicated investment entity, following discussions between PM Modi and Hyundai's Executive Chair Euisun Chung. The move underscores how global auto majors view India as a manufacturing and export hub, aiming to help Hyundai reclaim domestic market share from rivals. This sits alongside Adani Enterprises' new MoU with Jabil for a 50:50 AI and data-centre hardware manufacturing JV, pointing to a broader wave of capex commitments tied to India's industrial ambitions.
GQG's Adani Exit and Mixed FPI Signals
GQG Partners trimmed roughly Rs 8,000 crore across five Adani Group stocks in the September quarter, with its stake in Adani Energy Solutions falling sharply from 4.14% to 1.71%, even as some other Adani entities saw FPI interest hold or rise. This divergence suggests foreign investors are differentiating between individual group companies rather than treating the conglomerate as a single bet. Separately, FIIs sold Rs 1,305 crore of Indian shares, but domestic institutions bought Rs 2,439 crore, cushioning the market during Tuesday's IT-led rally.
IMF Upgrades India's Growth Outlook
The IMF raised India's FY27 and FY28 growth forecasts to 7%, citing resilient domestic demand and strong services-sector performance, after GDP growth hit 7.8% in FY26. Globally, the IMF lifted its 2026 growth forecast to 3.1%, supported by AI infrastructure investment, but flagged risks from prolonged Middle East tensions, elevated energy prices and rising debt. For India, this upgrade arrives even as Brent crude trades near $107.1, a reminder that favourable growth narratives coexist with real energy-cost pressures.
Tax Debate and Tata Governance Tensions
FM Sitharaman signaled openness to revisiting LTCG and STT frameworks after investors raised concerns at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum, calling a structured debate on capital gains taxation 'healthy.' Separately, Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran urged caution on the group's $120 billion growth investments amid reported boardroom tensions with Tata Trusts, while defending long-gestation bets like semiconductors. Both threads highlight how policy clarity and corporate governance discipline remain live variables for long-term capital allocation in India.
Earnings Season and Deal Flow Widen
Beyond IT, Tata Elxsi posted 10% profit growth to Rs 170 crore on 15% revenue growth, Bharat Electronics added Rs 533 crore in fresh orders since September, and Prestige Estates reported 20% growth in Q2 pre-sales to Rs 7,225 crore with a Rs 40,000 crore launch pipeline. Meanwhile, Aegis Logistics' $809 million acquisition of a 90% stake in Tristar Holdings and MUFG's reported consideration of a majority stake in Shriram Finance point to active strategic M&A activity. The HD Fire Protect IPO, backed by anchor investors including HDFC MF and ICICI Prudential MF, and PTC Industries' 5x-oversubscribed QIP, suggest primary market appetite remains robust despite global uncertainty.
